I always use GIMP for all of my graphical work.
It's quite easy to use, respects my freedoms, and is free of charge.

Meh I don't think you can learn everything from a teacher.
You have to play around without by yourself to master it, but it does help.

Gimp....
I found PS a lil over-complicated and all the useful options are actually provided for free on Gimp... PS can do ALOT more than gimp, but most of what PS can do is not entirely necessary
plus, I was beginning and didn't want to risk losing money on something I had no idea how to work with (gfx)
